Health and Safety for Wireless:
Canadian Regulatory Isssues
INDUSTRY/GOVERNMENT
ROUND-TABLE OPEN MEETING
RF DOSIMETRY RESEARCH BOARD (DRB)
Details:
Wireless telecommunications industry leaders,
engineering practitioners,
academics and the relevant regulatory bodies are invited to attend an open peer
commentary on the RF Dosimetry Research Board, to be held on August 26, 1997.
This one-day discussion will take place in Ottawa at Spectrum Sciences Institute (SSI), in conjunction with a visit to the co-located SAR labs of APREL Laboratories.
Your involvement and collaboration with officials and regulators (including Industry Canada), is invited.
Spectrum Sciences Institute (SSI) is a Canadian not-for-profit center dedicated to research and engineering. The SSI mission and objectives are to work with wireless industry and regulators to devise balanced technical input to help progress of evolving technologies. RF dosimetry ("RF exposure" or "SAR measurements") has become an important issue as part of greater concern of Health & Safety. The RF Dosimetry Research Board (DRB) is a project initiated in 1996 by the SSI. The need for a mechanism for the Canadian wireless industry to respond to the issue of health and safety is reflected in the mandate of DRB. Another motivating factor in the DRB was the need for cooperative effort of leading labs involved in implementation of dosimetry practices and search for balanced knowledge input to regulatory bodies.
The purpose of this meeting is to bring together representatives of all interest groups concerned with technical and regulatory issues surrounding electromagnetic exposure from wireless telephones. Discussions will allow documentation of current status and anticipated directions for seeking solutions to problems, existing and evolving, from both a regulatory and technical angle. Guidance of those managing technologies and developing safety regulations within the wireless communications delivery setting is crucial to identifying direction for technical investigations and developments.
Presentations of recent investigations, technological developments and standards are invited and will be followed by an open peer commentary.
The Spectrum Sciences Institute Dosimetry Research Board Project scope, research program framework and level of funding targeted will be discussed in order to secure broad participation of industry and to align the research and advisory work with needs of participating parties.
Considerations will be given to ideas on how issues can be managed and to formulate any recommendations deemed necessary in Canadian regulatory settings. Harmonization of Canadian regulations with other North American and International practices will also be discussed.
PLEASE NOTE THAT REGISTRATION IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS August 22, 1997.
Registration Fees:
To help defray costs of organizing this event, a registration fee of $ 245.00 (plus tax) per person will be charged, payable to Spectrum Sciences. No refunds allowed; substitutions permitted any time.

Industry Canada recognizes the issue of RF Dosimetry as an important element of certification and believes that joint Industry/Government efforts are necessary to address the issues involved.
The Radio Advisory Board of Canada (RABC) encourages interested parties to "consider attending this meeting to address these issues critical to our industry."
